Why Clear Directional Marking Prevents Accidents Before They Happen?

A warehouse in Derrimut had a serious near-miss when two forklifts met head-on at an internal intersection. Both operators assumed they had right of way. The intersection had no stop bars, no give way markings, and no directional arrows indicating traffic priority. The warehouse manager called us that afternoon. We assessed the entire facility's traffic flow and implemented a comprehensive marking scheme: stop bars at every intersection with clear priority designation, directional arrows throughout the aisles establishing one-way flow where possible, and give way symbols where two-way traffic was unavoidable. The warehouse hasn't had an intersection incident since. Directional arrows and stop bars seem simple, but placement matters enormously. An arrow placed too close to a turn doesn't give drivers time to react. A stop bar placed where sight lines are poor creates its own hazard. Stop bars at give way points need to be far enough back that stopped vehicles don't block the intersection for cross traffic. We learned about arrow placement the hard way at a shopping centre carpark in Doncaster in 2015. We placed directional arrows according to the architect's drawings, but the drawings didn't account for the actual sight lines.

Pavement Arrow Designs

AS 1742.2:2009 Section 4.3 provides standard arrow designs including straight, turn, and lane change arrows. We use compliant designs scaled appropriately for each application.

Industrial

Warehouse Traffic Management

Safe Work Australia guidelines for traffic management plans require clear directional marking in workplaces where vehicles operate. Our marking supports compliant traffic management systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard carpark arrows are 2.5m long as specified in AS/NZS 2890.1. For higher-speed areas or long approach distances, we use larger arrows up to 4m. For tight spaces, we can use reduced arrows down to 1.5m while maintaining proportions.

Stop bars should be placed where a stopped vehicle has clear sight lines to approaching traffic without blocking the intersection. Typically 1-2 metres back from the intersection edge, adjusted based on actual sight distances at your facility.

A stop bar is a solid line requiring vehicles to stop completely. A give way line is typically dashed or accompanied by a give way symbol, requiring drivers to yield but not necessarily stop if the way is clear. We'll recommend which is appropriate for each location.

Yes, we mark on concrete, asphalt, and sealed surfaces. Surface condition affects adhesion and durability. We'll assess your surface and recommend appropriate preparation and materials for lasting results.

Paint arrows in high-traffic areas typically last 12-24 months. Thermoplastic arrows last 3-5 years in similar conditions. We recommend thermoplastic for main circulation arrows and paint for lower-traffic areas to balance cost and durability.

Yes, warehouse arrow marking is a significant part of our work. We use high-visibility yellow or white for forklift aisles, often with wider lines and larger symbols than carpark applications due to the different operating environment.
