What is Road Marking That Stands Up to Australian Conditions?

A civil contractor in Pakenham called us last year mid-project. Their previous line marking subcontractor had pulled off the job, leaving a subdivision half-finished with council handover deadline in two weeks. They needed 4.2 kilometres of centre lines, edge lines, and intersection markings completed before the clock ran out.

We mobilised within 48 hours. Our crews worked six consecutive nights with full traffic management. Every marking met AS 1742 specifications. The subdivision passed council inspection first time. That's the kind of turnaround we're set up for.

We made costly mistakes early on. In 2013, we quoted a job in Ballarat without accounting for the steeper terrain. Crews took twice as long as estimated on the hill sections. That project taught us to always do proper site assessments, especially for regional work. We haven't underquoted a road job since.

Frequently Asked Questions

Thermoplastic is a hot-applied material that's thicker (2-3mm vs 0.3mm for paint) and far more durable. It lasts 4-6 years on high-traffic roads versus 1-2 years for paint. Paint is more economical for low-traffic residential streets. Most councils specify thermoplastic for arterial roads.

AS 1742.2 specifies 100mm width for standard broken centre lines and 150mm for barrier lines. Edge lines are typically 100mm. Lane lines vary between 80mm and 100mm depending on road classification.

We handle everything. Our crews include traffic control certified personnel and we provide all signage, cones, and barriers. Traffic management plans are prepared and submitted to relevant authorities as part of our service.

Thermoplastic is ready for traffic within 5-10 minutes of application as it cools and sets quickly. Waterborne paint needs 20-30 minutes in good conditions. We manage traffic around freshly marked areas until surfaces are safe.

Yes, we mark private roads in industrial estates, body corporate complexes, and commercial properties to the same standards as public roads. This is important if your private road connects to public roads or if council has conditions on your development.

We provide completion certificates, compliance documentation referencing AS 1742, material specifications, retroreflectivity test results if required, and photos. Everything councils need for Statement of Compliance sign-off.
