Why Slippery Floors Injure Workers and Create Legal Liability?

A food processing facility in Thomastown called us after a worker compensation claim from a slip injury. Their concrete floor became slippery when wet from processing activities. They'd already had three incidents that year and their insurer was concerned. They needed the floor treated to prevent further injuries. We applied an anti-slip coating rated to AS 4586 P4 classification across their wet processing areas. The coating provides grip even when the floor is wet with water and food residue. The facility reported zero slip incidents in the following year, and their insurance premium reflected the improvement. We made a coating selection error at a brewery in Abbotsford in 2017. We applied a coating rated for water but not for the oils present in brewing operations. The coating lost effectiveness within months where oil contamination occurred. We had to strip and reapply with a chemical-resistant anti-slip coating at our cost, around $5,200.

Coatings range from P1 to P5 under AS 4586. P3 minimum for wet barefoot areas, P4 for wet shod areas, P5 for ramps. We recommend ratings based on your application.

Standard coatings work for water but may not suit oils or chemicals. Industrial environments need chemical-resistant formulations. We verify your contaminants before specifying.

Coatings are available in various colours and can match existing floors or add colour coding. Clear coatings are available for surfaces where appearance is critical.

Durability depends on traffic and cleaning methods. High-traffic areas may need reapplication every 2-3 years. We can assess your environment and recommend maintenance schedules.

Yes, ramps require higher slip resistance than flat floors. We apply coatings meeting AS 4586 requirements for ramp gradients in your facility.

We provide documentation showing coating specifications and rated slip resistance classifications. Independent testing can be arranged if required for compliance purposes.
