Why Visitors Shouldn't Circle the Carpark Looking for Where to Park?

An office building in South Melbourne called us about visitor confusion. Their carpark had allocated tenant bays, but visitor parking was unmarked. Visitors parked in tenant bays, tenants complained, and the building manager spent hours dealing with parking disputes. They needed clear visitor designation. We marked a dedicated visitor zone near the main entry with large VISITOR text in each bay. Added wayfinding arrows from the carpark entry directing guests to the visitor area. The result was immediate: visitors found parking easily, tenant complaints stopped, and the building manager got their time back. We made a visibility error at a medical centre in Heidelberg in 2019. We marked VISITOR in standard 200mm text, but drivers couldn't read it until they were almost on top of the bay. The centre asked us to redo the stencils at 400mm height. We absorbed the cost, around $1,400. Now we default to larger text for visitor bays.

Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend minimum 300mm tall text, preferably 400mm for better visibility from moving vehicles. Smaller text is readable when standing next to the bay but hard to see when driving.

Ideally near the main building entry and close to any visitor intercom or access control point. Visitors shouldn't have to search through tenant areas to find guest parking.

Yes, we can add time restriction symbols like 2P or 4P to visitor bays. This encourages turnover and prevents visitors from using bays all day in busy facilities.

Colour differentiation helps but isn't essential. Some facilities use green for visitor bays versus white for tenant bays. Clear VISITOR text is the most important identifier.

Yes, numbered visitor bays work well for facilities with visitor registration systems. Visitors can be assigned a specific bay number that matches their booking or registration.

Yes, we mark directional arrows and VISITOR PARKING text at carpark entries and decision points. This guides visitors to the guest parking area without confusion.
